I was searching for useful and relevant articles on Exam Tips when I came across this article from the Florida Atlantic University Website. The points are highly relevant for anyone taking the O-Level Math and A-Math Exams except for <b>"Look Elsewhere on the Exam for Answers"</b> and <b>"Ask Questions" </b>which we all know is not possible in the Singapore context.<br />

This question gave the equation in the general form \({x^2} + {y^2} - 4x + 6y - 12 = 0\) . You are to find the value of the algebraic expression, meaning the numeric answer without the 'x', 'y' or 'z' terms. The way to do this is to convert all to a single variable, in this case we convert all to 'y' (Step 1). Then we eliminate 'y' to get the constant value (Step 2).<br />

There is more than one value for <i>k</i> that will make \(\frac{{504}}{k}\) a perfect square. For instance if k is \({2^3} \times 7\) the perfect square will be \({3^2}\) or 9. But the question ask for the smallest integer value of k so the answer 14 is correct and \({2^3} \times 7\) =56 is incorrect.<br />

This question is rather unique as you are not given the values of the rate of change in x or y with respect to time, instead you have to form an equation relating the two and manipulate the equation to find the value of dy/dx. Nowadays A-Math question can be very tricky, you need to understand the concepts rather then just practice blindly.<br />

It is not possible to solve the equation when 4sinxcosx = -1. You need to convert the equation to either sine or cosine. In the solution above, I converted to sine using the double angle formula. The second thing I want to highlight is that when you find for the solutions of x, please make sure that you include ALL the solutions within the required range. For this question, it is between and include 0 to 360 degrees.<br />

Interesting and kind of funny video. There are only 4 questions in this 3min 11 sec Video. Apparently most people get most of the answers wrong...including me...YES.. an experience Math tutor of 18 years (embarrassing). After watching this video, you can ask your friends these question to see if they are "smarter" then you. ENJOY.</div>

<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>6 ways to reduce Math anxiety (especially during tests and exams)</b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>1. Learn relaxation techniques.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Techniques such as slow deep breathing while counting from one to five is</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> helpful when dealing math anxiety especially during tests and exams. Count slowly from one to five, exhale on every count, then repeat the next cycle from one to five until the anxiety disappears.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>2. Combat negative thinking.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Lack of confidence is a big hurdle for students with math anxiety. Replace those negative</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">thoughts (“I can’t do this”, “I’ve never been good at math”, “I won’t finish in time”) with positive thoughts </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> (“I know this”, “I’m prepared”, “I can do this”).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>3. Visualize yourself succeeding.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When I was younger, I competed in sports, my coach taught us the technique of “visualization” to prepare for competitions. I found this mental preparation technique applicable for test and exams as well. The night before and on the day prior to the exam, imagine yourself being </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">relaxed, confidently solving the problems and scoring well for the paper. This technique will calm you down and keep you focus on what's important. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>4. Do “easiest” problems first.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Be like a </span>scavenger<span style="font-family: inherit;"> (think: vulture). Attempt all the easy questions first and pick up the easy marks, Do not be so rigid as to stubbornly try to complete questions in a sequential order (i.e. Attempt Q1 complete Q1' attempt Q2, complete Q2...). Once you have gain some easy marks, attempt the more challenging questions on the second try. This technique will boost up your confidence when you already know you have gain some easy marks ( hopefully >50%) on your first try, </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">It’ll help you relax when you tackle the “harder” stuff.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>5. Start preparing early.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If you try to “cram” the material quickly, you are likely to forget it quickly too. If you practice the</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">material over a period of time, you will have a better understanding of it and are less likely to forget it</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">when under stress. When you "cram" material, most information will NOT be transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory. But if you practice the same topics a few times over an extended period , the information will be stored in your long-term memory and you will less likely to forget to next time you need to retrieve the information from memory.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>6. Try to understand the “why” of math concepts rather than memorizing.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The first thing to go when you are under stress is your short-term memory. You will forget what you "cram" in your head the night before. This is one reason it is so </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">important to understand that math is not just a set of rules that you have to memorize but that each </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">concept builds on what came before. If you understand the reason behind the rules, you will remember </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">the concepts better and be able to apply them in many different types of problems (not just ones you’ve </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">seen before). That is why during tuition lessons, I keep on emphasizing on the concepts and NOT on easy tricks and short-cuts to solve problems.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<b>What is Math anxiety?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Math anxiety is “the panic, helplessness, and mental confusion that arises <span style="text-align: center;">among some people when they need to solve mathematical problems. P</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 16px; line-height: 19.2px;">hysical symptoms of math anxiety include increased heart rate, sweaty hands, upset stomach, and light-headed. Psychological symptoms include an </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 16px; line-height: 19.2px;">inabilit</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 16px; line-height: 19.2px;">y</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 16px; line-height: 19.2px;"> to concentrate, the feelings of helplessness, worry, and disgrace</span></span></span></div>

A single incidents like this could have left a lasting impression on the student if made to feel ashamed or embarrassed. </span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 20px;">Time limit on tests/ exam and the fear of public embarrassment are two major factors of math anxiety. Even if a student has no problems completing their work at home, they may have difficulty doing well for a test or exam. Since the results of tests/exam usually affects a student's overall math performance, the negative results of math anxiety reinforce their feeling of inadequacy and creates a vicious cycle in</span><span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 20px;"> which fear of math </span></span></span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 20px;">interferes with learning math which leads to more negative math experiences.</span></div>

If you take a look at the second line from the top \[{(\sqrt { - x} )^2} = - x\] , some of you make this mistake \[{(\sqrt { - x} )^2} \ne x\] . The square and square root will cancel out each other, you do not square the negative sign to make it positive. Please be on the lookout .<br />

I think the difficulty some of you face is that you don't know how may times you need to differentiate an expression.<br />
Sorry but I don't have a fix method/formula to guide you through this. Perhaps you can take your textbook or assesment<br />
book. Look at similar questions, test yourself on how many times you need to differentiate, then check the answers. <br />
You do not need to do the full workings for every question, just test yourself on the number of times you need to <br />
differentiate. All the best.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Maths is one of those subjects which you can easily spend hours studying but end up none the wiser. </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">However much you have studied, if you can not solve the problem on day of the test, you are lost. Thankfully,</span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"> there are some </span></span><strong style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;">techniques for studying maths</strong><span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;"> that you can do regardless of your level. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">1. Practice, Practice & More Practice</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">It is impossible to study maths properly by just reading and listening. </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">To study maths you have to roll up your sleeves and actually solve some problems. </span></span><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">The more you practice answering maths problems, the better</strong><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">. </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Each problem has its own characteristics and it’s important to have solved it in numerous ways before tackling the exam. </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">There is no escaping this reality, to do well in a Maths exam you need to have solved some mathematical problems beforehand. </span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">2. Review Errors</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
When you’re practising with these problems, it’s important to <strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">work through the process for each solution</strong>. If you have made any mistakes, you should review them and understand where your problem-solving skills let you down. Understanding how you approached the problem and where you went wrong is a great way of becoming stronger and avoiding the same mistakes in the future.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">3. Master the Key Concepts</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Do not try to memorise the processes.</strong> This is counter-productive. It is much better and rewarding in the long-run to focus on understanding the process and logic that is involved. This will help you understand how you should approach such problems in the future.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">4. Understand your Doubts</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
Sometimes you can get stuck trying to solve part of a maths problem and find it difficult to move on to the next stage. It’s common for many students to skip this question and continue on to the next. You should avoid doing this and instead spend time trying to understand the process of solving the problem. Once you have grasped an understanding of the initial problem, you can use this as a stepping stone to progress to the remainder of the question.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration: underline;">Remember</span>: Maths requires time and patience to master.</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><br /></strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">5. Create a Distraction Free Study Environment</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Mathematics is a subject that requires more </span><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">concentration</strong><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"> than any other. </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">A proper study environment and a </span></span><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">distraction free area</strong><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"> could be the determining factor when solving complex equations or problems in geometry, algebra or trigonometry!</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">6. Create a Mathematical Dictionary</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Mathematics has specific terminology with a lot of </span><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">vocabulary</strong><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">. </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">We suggest you create </span></span>Notes<span style="box-sizing: border-box;"> or </span>Flashcards<span style="box-sizing: border-box;"> with all the concepts and definitions you need to know. You should include their meanings, some key points and even some sample answers so you can consult them at any time and recap.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">7. Apply Maths to Real World Problems</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">As much as possible, try to apply real-world problems when approaching maths. </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Maths can be very abstract sometimes so looking for a practical application can help change your perspective and assimilate ideas differently.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
Probability, for example, can be used in everyday life to predict the outcome of something happening and determine whether you want to take a risk such as if you should buy a lottery ticket or gamble.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 28px; text-align: justify;">
Oh and don’t forget that it’s also important <strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">to have confidence in yourself</strong> and face the exam knowing that you have prepared properly!</div>

It took 15 months to hit 1 000 000 since the 'birth' of this blog. This number may not be large compared to some lifestyle/special interest blogs which may have 1 000 000 hits per month, but considering the fact that my target audience are secondary school students who are studying Math in Singapore the potential fan base is rather small compare to general blogs that target international audience. Furthermore blogging is more of a passion and a hobby for me rather than a source of income, I try to blog whenever I can. Like the most of you, my life is a juggling act, I spend my time juggling between giving Additional Math and Math tuition, researching/studying for my part-time Master in EducationTechnology degree, attending to and spending time with family and friends, travelling between Johor Bahru and Singapore(yes this takes a bit of my time) and blogging. </div>
